Brian Scott, Ben Kennedy and Phoenix International Raceway Staff talk NASCAR with student at the University of Arizona.

Up and coming NASCAR stars Brian Scott and Ben Kennedy headlined Phoenix International Raceway’s NASCAR 101 on the Main Mall at the University of Arizona on Tuesday. The drivers participated in a question and answer program with KIIM-FM DJ Porkchop flanked by the PIR show car and pace cars.

Earlier in the morning Scott and Kennedy, along with representatives from PIR, participated in a panel discussion with sports management students from the Eller College of Business. The drivers explained the business side of NASCAR, including sponsorships and brand activation.

Scott is in his third year at Richard Childress Racing as driver of the No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. A native of Boise, Idaho, Scott has five top 5’s in his sixth season in the series.

“I thought it was a lot of fun,” he said. “I grew up in Idaho and I had a lot of friends that actually went to college here, but I myself have never been to Tucson or the University of Arizona campus. Obviously, it’s really beautiful. I really enjoyed talking to the sports management group and also the NASCAR 101 on the mall. There’s a lot of car and race fans here that have clubs set up here. I’m glad to see that; definitely something I would’ve been involved in so it’s neat for those people that are interested to have an outlet and a way to connect with other people who have similar interests.”

The 2014 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year, Kennedy is the great grandson of the legendary Big Bill France Sr. Driver of the No. 11 Toyota Tundra for Red Horse Racing, he has one pole win this season along with three top-5 finishes.

“I had a great time out here at the U of A campus and see all the students and talk to them,” Kennedy said. “They have a great student body here. A lot of them are really enthusiastic about racing and NASCAR. They asked some great questions during our Q&A session. I really enjoy talking to them one-on-one. The car club came out here and it’s cool to see groups like that be enthusiastic about our sport and really be engaged. It’s great to be out here with PIR and all in all, a good day.”

Scott and Kennedy will return to Arizona in a few weeks’ time for the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 NASCAR Weekend Nov. 12-15. Kennedy will race in the Lucas Oil 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Friday, Nov. 13, while Scott will take the green flag in the DAV 200 Honoring America’s Veterans, Presented by Great Clips NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The Semi-Final Race weekend of the season will conclude with the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, Nov. 15. That race will be the final Eliminator race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and will determine the final four drivers who will move on to the season finale with a chance to race for the championship.
