Joey Logano

Race car driver. Youngster. Spokesperson. Check. Check. Check.

Carpenter? You know it.

After an off week on the Sprint Cup Series schedule and in advance of his trip to Atlanta for the 25th race of 2009, rookie Joey Logano visited Phoenix this week on behalf of Coca-Cola.

While in town, Logano traveled to a downtown redevelopment project site for Habitat for Humanity, where he chatted with volunteers, signed autographs, and even swung a hammer with members of the Phoenix International Raceway staff who were working on building a garage for a local family.

Unaffected by the triple-digit Phoenix temperature – Logano compared the heat to what he feels inside his No. 20 The Home Depot Toyota – the 19-year-old expressed his appreciation for the work of the volunteers from PIR, Coca-Cola, The Home Depot, and Habitat for Humanity.

"This is a really neat thing," Logano said. "Coca-Cola got me out here, so we're going to try to help them out and do some things with this house. It's cool to see all of these people working out here, as hot as it is. You know, it feels like it's 120 degrees, and everyone's still working hard on this house."

Though Logano struggled at first during his work shift in attaching some sheathing materials, he quickly improved, showing himself to be almost as quick a study with a hammer as he is with a steering wheel. Logano won at the age of 16 in his first NASCAR start, a Camping World Series West event at Phoenix International Raceway in April 2007.

Currently 19th in points, Logano expressed optimism in his team's chances for improvement in the final 12 races of the season – citing repetition as key.

"We need to focus on getting some more good runs and building momentum for the beginning of next year," he said. "As we go to tracks a second time, it's all going to come together."

Tickets to see Logano and the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' stars at Phoenix International Raceway during the Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 Presented by Pennzoil weekend are available at the newly-designed or by calling 1-866-408-RACE (7223).
